When planning a safari in Tanzania, one question often comes up: Serengeti or Ngorongoro? The simple answer is that they offer two very different experiences — and experiencing both is exactly what makes a northern Tanzania safari so special.

Serengeti: Where the Wild Feels Endless

The Serengeti is all about space, freedom and the unexpected. Its vast plains stretch towards the horizon, creating the feeling that the wilderness simply never ends.

It is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, leopards and huge herds of grazing animals. It is also the setting for the Great Migration, when enormous numbers of wildebeest, zebras and other herbivores move through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.

But the Serengeti is much more than the Migration. Wildlife encounters can be remarkable throughout the year, and because of its enormous size, every game drive can reveal something completely different.

Ngorongoro: A World Within a Crater

Ngorongoro offers an entirely different feeling.

Descending from the crater rim onto the floor below is an experience in itself. Within the ancient volcanic caldera lies a remarkable mixture of grasslands, wetlands and woodland, supporting a high concentration of wildlife in a relatively compact area.

Here, you may encounter lions, buffalo, elephants, hippos, hyenas, zebras and wildebeest within the same game drive. Ngorongoro is also one of Tanzania's important areas for seeing the endangered black rhino, although, as everywhere in the wild, sightings can never be guaranteed.

And then there is the scenery. Looking across the crater floor with its steep walls rising around you makes Ngorongoro feel almost like a natural world of its own.

Two Places, Two Experiences

Trying to decide which one is “better” misses what makes them special.

The Serengeti gives you scale — long game drives, open landscapes and the excitement of exploring an enormous wilderness.

Ngorongoro gives you intensity — dramatic scenery and an impressive amount of wildlife concentrated within one extraordinary landscape.

Together, they show two completely different sides of Tanzania.

If your itinerary allows, don't rush through either destination simply to add another park to your list. Spending enough time in the Serengeti and then experiencing Ngorongoro gives you a much richer feeling for Tanzania's landscapes and wildlife.
