It sounds like a simple question: when is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania? The answer is more interesting than choosing a single month. Tanzania changes throughout the year, and the right time depends on what you would most love to experience.

The Classic Safari Season

From June to October, conditions are generally drier, vegetation becomes less dense and wildlife often gathers around available water. This can make animals easier to spot and creates the classic safari experience many first-time travellers imagine. It is also one of the most popular times to visit.

A Season of New Life

From January into March, attention turns towards the southern Serengeti and surrounding plains. This is the famous calving period, when large numbers of wildebeest give birth. New life also attracts predators, making this a fascinating season for travellers interested in wildlife behaviour.

The Green Season

Rain transforms Tanzania. The plains become beautifully green, skies can be dramatic and many areas feel quieter. Birdlife is exceptional, the colours are wonderful for photography and fewer visitors can create a very different safari atmosphere. A little rain does not mean the safari stops - sometimes it creates the most memorable moments.

And the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is a continuous natural movement, not an event with a guaranteed date. The herds respond to rainfall, grazing and changing conditions, and famous river crossings cannot be scheduled. A good safari follows nature rather than promising what nature will do.

Don't choose your dates simply because someone says one month is "the best". Think first about what matters most to you: wildlife, the Migration, photography, green landscapes, fewer visitors or classic dry-season conditions.

So, When Should You Come?

Perhaps the better question is not, "What is the best month for Tanzania?" but, "What would I most love to experience?" Once you know that, choosing the right season becomes much easier.

Because Tanzania doesn't really have one perfect season. It has different reasons to return in every season.
